Thousands of Class 10 students in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh miss ISTC seats every year. Not because they weren't capable — because nobody told them what the exam actually tests.
The Indo Swiss Training Centre (ISTC) in Chandigarh is one of India's most respected technical training institutes. Set up with Swiss collaboration, it trains toolmakers, mechatronics technicians, and electronics specialists to a standard you won't find at most polytechnics. Seats are limited. The exam is competitive. And most students walk in underprepared.
Here's what you actually need to know.
Eligibility
Class 10 passed with Science and Mathematics. Age is typically between 14 and 21 years at the time of admission. Different trades may have slightly different requirements, so check the official notification for your year.
Trades on offer
ISTC Chandigarh offers Tool and Die Making, Mechatronics, Precision Instrument Technology, and Electronics Technology, among others. Some trades have as few as 20–25 seats per batch. That's not many.
Applying
Applications usually open between March and April through the official ISTC or CSIO website. Keep your Class 10 marksheet, date of birth proof, and passport-size photographs ready before you start the form.
What the exam covers
The written test is objective-type (MCQ) and draws from Class 10 Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. There is also a General Knowledge and Reasoning section. Shortlisted candidates for some trades face a practical aptitude test or interview in the next round.
How selection works
Merit-based on written test score. No back-door. Some trades add a practical round — check the notification for yours.
The mistake most students make
They treat ISTC like a regular exam and try to cover everything. That wastes time. The math section focuses on algebra, mensuration, and basic trigonometry. Physics is mostly mechanics and electricity. Go deep on those first.
I ranked AIR 8 in the ISTC entrance exam. The thing that actually made a difference was solving previous year papers early — before I'd even finished revising — so I knew which topics kept coming back. Most do.
