The students who struggle in ISTC preparation are almost never the ones who lack ability. They're the ones who studied everything and ran out of time.
The ISTC entrance exam is based on Class 10 curriculum — but it does not test everything equally. Certain chapters show up again and again. Others barely appear. If you know which is which, you can prepare smarter.
Here's the breakdown.
Mathematics (highest weightage section)
Focus on these:
Number systems and HCF/LCM
Algebra — linear and quadratic equations
Mensuration — areas and volumes of 2D and 3D figures
Basic Trigonometry — ratios, identities, simple applications
Statistics — mean, median, mode
Coordinate Geometry — basic concepts only
Skip deep work on polynomials and complex constructions. They rarely appear.
Physics
Laws of Motion — Newton's laws, friction
Work, Energy and Power
Electricity and Circuits — Ohm's Law, series and parallel
Magnetism basics
Light — reflection and refraction
Electricity and Motion are the two most repeated topics. Know them well.
Chemistry
Acids, Bases and Salts
Metals and Non-metals
Chemical Reactions — balancing equations
Carbon compounds (basics)
Periodic Table trends
General Knowledge and Reasoning
GK covers current affairs from the last 6 months before the exam, basic Indian geography, and science-related news. Reasoning includes number series, analogies, coding-decoding, and pattern recognition.
How to use this list
Print it. Tick chapters as you finish them. Solve at least 2–3 previous year papers per subject. Time yourself — the paper moves faster than most students expect.
I ranked AIR 8 in the ISTC entrance exam by focusing on exactly these topics and nothing else. Syllabus discipline is half the job.
